Which Civ PC strategy game do you think is the best of them all to date? I don't know about Steam, but there's a pretty big community for FreeCiv, which is a free clone of Civ 2 (with a few upgrades from the original).I don't know exactly what has been missing but it simply hasn't drawn me in. Freeciv can emulate most of the "early" versions of Civilization in terms of look, but it has never felt like Civilization to me. I've tried it a few times over the years (including in-browser play! What a world, we live in). Sid Meier’s Civilization III FreeCiv never sat well with me.
I keep finding the PC masterpieces of the 00s at thrift stores and its pretty rad You can play FreeCiv and select the Civ2 ruleset. The catch is that the source code is available and completely readable and you can even compile it yourself. If you mean the native client from, I can assure you it is pure as a driven snow. I know I shouldn’t be so hesitant about downloading this on my laptop, but I am.
